Implementation

Implementation:

Most music lessons across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 are taught following Kapow or Sing Up, with EYFS using additional resources when it is applicable. Both primary music schemes take a holistic approach to music, in which the individual strands are woven together to create engaging and enriching learning experiences. Each unit has been carefully chosen for each class to teach the pupils the knowledge and vocabulary required to progress in:

  • Listening and Evaluating
  • Creating Sound (KS1)
  • Composing and Improvising
  • Performing: Singing and Playing
  • Notation

In each lesson, pupils actively participate in musical activities drawn from a diverse range of styles and traditions, and some show links to other areas of the curriculum to provide context.
We have strong links with Lincolnshire Music Service and they provide 12 weeks of expert whole-class instrumental lessons for Year 3 and 4, with opportunities for the pupils to showcase what they have learned through performances. A well-structured music week takes place every three years to give all pupils the opportunity to showcase their composition skills ending with a class performance.
Extra-curricular choir sessions are open to pupils across KS1 and KS2. There are many occasions organised for pupils to perform such as at Young Voices, Grantham Music Festival and at our local church. We have visiting music teachers who offer all children the chance to participate in piano and singing lessons outside of class. Our weekly choral worship enables every child a time to sing in addition to their class music lesson. Daily collective worship provides pupils with further opportunities to listen, enjoy and develop their appreciation of different musical styles.
