Implementation
Implementation
At Marston Thorold's, the English Curriculum consists of:
Writing
- Text-led narrative learning journeys with a clear end point, based on Jane Considine
- Well planned non-fiction units taught with purpose and audience at the forefront
- Opportunities to apply taught skills in other areas of the curriculum
Spelling
- Daily Phonics sessions throughout EYFS/KS1, following Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme
- Spelling is taught at least three times weekly for 20 minutes throughout KS2, supplemented by additional focus on the Statutory Spelling Lists of each year group
Handwriting
- Non-cursive handwriting is taught throughout school following our handwriting policy on joining
- Handwriting is linked closely with Phonics and Spelling lessons, with teachers using discreet handwriting lessons when necessary
Reading
- Reading is taught through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme in EYFS and KS1. Children read in a group three times weekly focusing on decoding, prosody and comprehension. In Year 2, children move away from Little Wandle and into reading fluency groups.
- Whole Class Reading is taught throughout KS2 with a focus on high quality texts and a progression of skills.
- Accelerated Reader is used from Y2 upwards to support reading assessment and comprehension development.
Opportunities for curriculum adaptation and challenge, pre teaching and interventions for those children who may require it, including those with SEN, throughout a topic or prior to a new topic being taught.
